The Imperial Palette

The dominant colors of the Forbidden City—Yellow and Red—are not just for aesthetic appeal; they are loaded with political and philosophical meaning.

Yellow: The Emperor's Color

Representing the element of Earth at the center of the universe, yellow was the exclusive color of the Emperor. Most roofs are covered in yellow glazed tiles.

Red: Good Fortune

The walls are painted "imperial red," symbolizing wealth, happiness, and fire. In the Five Elements theory, fire produces earth (yellow), reinforcing the structure's stability.

Exception: The library (Pavilion of Literary Profundity) has a black roof, as black represents water, which provides protection against fire for the precious books inside.

Numerology

The Power of Nine

In traditional Chinese culture, odd numbers are considered "Yang" (male/imperial), and nine is the highest single-digit odd number, representing the Emperor himself.

  • Gate Rivets: Almost every major gate features a 9x9 grid of golden rivets (81 total).
  • 9,999 Rooms: Tradition states the palace has 9,999.5 rooms, as only the Jade Emperor in Heaven could have 10,000.
  • Roof Statues: The number of figurines on building ridges indicates rank. Only the Hall of Supreme Harmony has the maximum of 10 (nine animals plus one immortal).
Mythical Protectors

Dragons & Phoenixes

Animal imagery is pervasive throughout the palace, serving as spiritual guardians and symbols of rank.

The Dragon (Long)

The supreme symbol of the Emperor, the dragon represents power, strength, and good luck. Look for dragons with five claws—this specific design was reserved solely for imperial use.

The Phoenix (Fenghuang)

The symbol of the Empress. When depicted together, the dragon and phoenix symbolize a harmonious marriage and the balance of Yin and Yang.

Bronze Lions

Lions often stand in pairs at the entrances to important halls. The male (on the right) rests his paw on a globe, representing dominion over the world, while the female (on the left) protects a cub, symbolizing the growth and protection of the imperial line.
