Barrier-Free Facilities

The Forbidden City has undergone extensive renovations to improve accessibility. Today, many of the main courtyards and halls can be visited via specialized routes and equipment.

Wheelchair Rental

Manual wheelchairs are available for rent at the Meridian Gate (entry) and the Gate of Divine Prowess (exit) on a first-come, first-served basis. A deposit is required.

Ramps & Elevators

Specialized ramps have been installed next to many of the main stairs. For the most significant height changes, such as the white marble terraces, elevators are available with staff assistance.

Visiting Guide

Recommended Accessible Route

To avoid steep stairs and uneven thresholds, we recommend following the main central axis, which has the most developed accessibility features.

  • Enter: Meridian Gate (Wumen). Use the ramps on the west side of the gate building.
  • Outer Court: Cross the Golden Water Bridge via the specialized ramp. Ramps are available for the Gate of Supreme Harmony and the three main ceremonial halls.
  • Inner Court: Use the elevator on the west side of the Gate of Heavenly Purity to access the residential area.
  • Imperial Garden: The paths are mostly flat, though some side pavilions may have steps.
  • Exit: Gate of Divine Prowess (Shenwumen). Use the ramp on the left side of the exit.
