Expert Advice

Maximizing Your Time

One-Way Entry

Remember that you must enter through the Meridian Gate (Wumen) at the south and exit through the Gate of Divine Prowess (Shenwumen) at the north. You cannot double back to the south entrance once you have passed into the inner court.

Stay Hydrated and Rested

The palace involves a lot of walking on stone pavements. There are several service areas with cafes and restrooms, particularly near the Imperial Garden and along the eastern and western wings. Plan for at least one 20-minute break during a 4-hour visit.

Audio Guides vs. Human Guides

  • Audio Guide: Great for 2-4 hour visits if you prefer to move at your own pace.
  • Half-Day Guided Tour: Recommended for the 4-hour route to understand the complex symbolism and history without constantly checking a map.
  • Full-Day Private Tour: The best option for a 6-hour deep dive.
